The Royal & Ancestral Roots
To understand the Kamale Ngoni, one must first look back to the historic Mali Empire. The goni instrument family carries the resonance of centuries of storytelling, historically restricted as the exclusive domain of the Griots (Jeli).
The Evolution of the Goni
This timeline illustrates the historical journey of the instrument, transitioning from sacred royal courts to modern cultural preservation initiatives.
13th Century: The Mali Empire
Founded by Sundiata Keita. The traditional Jeli Ngoni emerges as a restricted instrument used by hereditary oral historians to advise kings and preserve royal bloodlines.
1950s - 1960s: The Wassoulou Shift
A cultural revolution in Mali. Young musicians create the Kamale Ngoni (Youth Harp) to express daily struggles and social commentary outside of strict hereditary castes.
November 2026: Immersive Playing Camp Launch
The official rollout of our playing and storytelling camp. Students arrive in Ghana to learn traditional repertoire unencumbered by Western methodology, performing a final community recital.
The Secular Revolution
The birth of the Kamale Ngoni democratized West Afrikan string music. It allowed a new generation to honor ancient acoustics while playing accessible, upbeat music.

Every playing instrument utilized in our camp—and available for custom worldwide commission—is personally built by King Soma Bilah in Ghana.
